Brownhills Civic Square Public Realm, Walsall
Fitzgerald Contractors have successfully completed the construction of a new centrepiece civic square at Brownhills High Street for Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council, with the £400K+ scheme underlining the council’s commitment to the ongoing enhancement of the town centre.
Our scope of works over the 16-week construction period comprised of site clearance and earthworks to reprofile the site, the provision of drainage to create new hard and soft landscaped areas and installation of high-specification feature lighting that accentuates focal points of the square. The civic square comprises retaining structures and gabion seating with provision for pop-up market stalls and community events, and in December 2021 our site team oversaw the installation of a Christmas tree in time for the festive lights switch on.
As part of our preconstruction planning Fitzgerald worked collaboratively with our supply chain partners to review the scheme design and to provide suggestions as to suitability and costs of lighting and fencing. We were able to review gabion seating details and propose an alternative design and de-scope the scheme to reduce cost, resulting in a significant saving to Walsall MBC. The public realm scheme has been carried out with an excellent safety record whilst ensuring that the public were fully segregated from our works through regular communication, aided by clear signage and information boards.
