A45 Sprint Priority Bus Route Birmingham
Fitzgerald were awarded a significant highway upgrade scheme in Birmingham by securing the A45 Sprint route scheme to deliver a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. The new buses will use the existing A45 and be enhanced by a range of infrastructure upgrades including road widening to ensure journey time reliability and an improved customer experience including high priority lanes, signal controlled priority at traffic lights and new improved shelters.
The route begins at Moor Street Queensway in Birmingham City Centre and extends 9km along the A45 infrastructure corridor to Swan Island in Yardley, and will facilitate the infrastructure for a new low-emission bus-based transit system.
Construction along the route took place in a live environment and entailed carriageway widening, bus stop installation, provision of new footways, combined kerb drainage, traffic signal and street lighting installation along with ducting and chamber construction, surfacing and line marking.
The scheme is an integral connection to Birmingham and Solihull and is an important and extremely public facing element of the scheme with the need for the route to be complete in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and this was successfully achieved on programme.
