Sheffield Station Gateway Public Realm
Fitzgerald Contractors were awarded a key highways and public realm project for Interserve Strategic Projects to regenerate Sheffield City Centre in the areas surrounding Midland Railway Station and Hallam University.
The scope of works included a pedestrian “super crossing”, hard landscaping, feature lighting and construction of concrete structures for the cascade water features on insitu concrete piles. The scheme also incorporated extensive diversions of statutory undertakers equipment. During the works we were active members of planning meetings with the client and representatives of the Statutory Undertakers to enable the effective coordination of the works.
The area is subject to extremely high volumes of traffic and pedestrian movements which necessitated considerable management to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of the scheme. The works area is located outside Sheffield Midland Railway Station and during the construction of the highway improvements the scheme involved the removal of an existing traffic island and realignment of the existing highway. This required extensive traffic management and carrying out works at night and at weekends to accommodate the restricted working requirements of a busy city centre location.
