Primark Pavilions Birmingham Public Realm

The company were contracted to deliver a high-profile public realm scheme at Primark’s new flagship store in Birmingham City Centre. The store is Primark’s largest in floor area to date and features the latest contemporary shop fit out and an enhanced customer experience across 160,000ft2 of retail space and five floors.

Our project was located opposite the Bullring Shopping Centre and Birmingham Moor Street Railway Station and involved the removal of the existing pavement and relaying new paving across a 1,200m² area. In addition, our scope of works involved the installation of 23 No. Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) bollards and the construction of a set of diminishing steps.

The logistical challenges of delivering the works proved particularly challenging due to the high volume of pedestrians as well as the works taking place adjacent to one of the busiest bus stop in Birmingham in the months leading up to Christmas. To overcome these challenges our in-house planning team produced a detailed phasing plan and liaised with Birmingham City Council to integrate our planning into a robust and practical construction plan. At preconstruction stage our team identified noise, dust and vibration as key issues to mitigate in our considerate constructors action plan, and through a series of meetings and toolbox talks we ensured that issues each had mitigation measures.

The paving works in the vicinity of the bus stop (with a capacity for three buses) were carried out by closing the area where the first bus picked up passengers, we then completed our works and subsequently handed back this area prior to progressing to the middle bus stop area. The site had restricted access in place throughout the scheme’s duration and there was no on-site compound for storage. Some work activities were programmed to take place at night whilst deliveries were scheduled and booked two days in advance to a specific timeslot. The works have been delivered safely with works completed with zero complaints from the public.
