A45 Cycle Route: Safer, Sustainable Travel for Birmingham
We’re pleased to share the successful delivery of our A45 Cycle Route scheme for Birmingham City Council, providing a permanent, segregated cycle lane between Birmingham City Centre and Yardley, transforming the temporary pop-up route introduced in 2020 into long-term, high-quality infrastructure.
Delivered through the Black Country Framework for Minor Works (2021–2024), this 14-week project involved:
– Widened footways for cycle segregation
– New drainage installation
– Toucan crossing upgrades
– A newly signalised junction at Bolton Road / Small Heath Bridge / Jenkins Street
Working on one of Birmingham’s busiest arterial routes, success hinged on strong stakeholder engagement, traffic management, and programme control.
From the outset, we collaborated with Birmingham City Council, local residents, schools, and businesses, including Holy Trinity Catholic School, to ensure clear and consistent communication.
Early engagement with supply chain partner Swarco enabled us to co-develop traffic solutions and address existing signal ducting issues, avoiding delays and minimising temporary light use at Bordesley Circus, a major city junction.
Thanks to proactive planning, day/night working, and precise coordination, we delivered the scheme on time, on budget, and without incident, despite complex constraints and unchartered utilities.
We’re proud to have earned recognition from BCC:
“I want to thank your team for the splendid work they have done over 14 weeks in what has been a challenging scheme” – Muhammed Arif, BCC
We truly consider it a privilege to play a part in making our communities safer, more accessible, and better connected.
