Acocks Green Highways Improvements
The £2 million scheme on behalf of Birmingham City Council is a vital highway improvement scheme in order to alleviate congestion, improve safety and access, as well as acting as a catalyst for attracting more investment and prosperity to the locality. The scope of works involved utility diversions, removal of the existing central reservation on Warwick Road, along with reduction of the number of traffic lanes in each direction from two lanes to single lanes. Pedestrian safety and access to all areas of the local centre was vital throughout the contract, and one of the main ways we achieved this was in our programming of works. By constructing the carriageway section first, once complete, this extra space allowed the team to divert pedestrians onto the newly built section, all whilst maintaining good access to shops, and minimising noise, dust and vibration.
Certain aspects of works were completed outside of standard daytime shopping hours, including weekend working at quieter periods. Final surfacing was undertaken at night,as this avoided any disruption at the locality of the works area. We undertook close liaison with retailers to plan the works, especially across business thresholds. At contract completion we were pleased to be the winner of the 2016 CIHT Award ‘Best Small Highways & Transport’.
