Bedford Square Gateway Highway and public realm improvements

Fitzgerald were appointed by Charnwood Borough Council as principal contractor to carry out a £2.9m highway and public realm upgrade scheme as part of the Bedford Square Gateway Improvements in Loughborough, Leicestershire. The civil engineering contract was one of the very first to be awarded as part of our place on the Crown Commercial Service Construction Works and Associated Services Framework Lot 1.2.1.

The ‘pedestrians first’ scheme aim was to improve the quality of public realm within Bedford Square, Ward’s End and Devonshire Square and provide better pedestrian connectivity. Our scope of work involved utility diversions, footway widening with provision of high-quality granite paving together with carriageway realignment and resurfacing. The team also installed upgraded street furniture, landscaping and street lighting.

The Bedford Square Gateway project has an overall area of 6,860m2 and was undertaken across five key phases whilst maintaining safe access to vehicles and pedestrians. Works commenced on site in February 2021 with the scheme accommodating the annual street fair taking place in November 2021, which saw the town celebrate its 800th year in Loughborough. The scheme was safely and successfully handed over in summer 2022 to the full satisfaction of our client Charnwood Borough Council.
