Droitwich Leisure Centre Car Park Extension

Droitwich Leisure Centre Car Park Extension

Our recently completed Droitwich Leisure Centre Car Park Extension involved the timely delivery of the car park extension to support follow-on works at Droitwich Leisure Centre. Our scope involved the construction of two new car parks within the Leisure Centre grounds, including the provision of street lighting and delivery of upgrades to the existing front car park network. In addition, the works involved:

  • The Installation of surface water attenuation in two locations, with interceptor and outfall chambers, including a hydro brake.
  • The excavation and disposal of made ground, stripping down to virgin clay within the car park footprint, with clay material stockpiled on-site for reuse in a future pump track scheme.
  • The provision of footways around the car park to ensure access to the hockey pitch.
  • The installation of fencing, gates, and height restriction barriers.
  • The upgrade of the existing access off Briar Mill to allow two-way traffic flow through the gate to the rear car park and up to Droitwich Spa Football Club.

We also undertook tree and vegetation clearance and landscaping works upon completion.

During construction of the scheme, the team faced unexpected challenges that tested our planning and adaptability. Unchartered drainage on-site caused flooding in sections of the works, threatening progress and requiring swift, effective solutions. Coupled with a tight programme to ensure the car park was ready in time for the planned follow-on works at the leisure centre, these issues demanded careful coordination, innovative problem-solving, and close communication across the site team. The team’s proactive approach ensured that all drainage issues were resolved, additional works were incorporated seamlessly, and the completed car parks met the client’s high-quality standards and requirements. The project not only stayed on schedule but also maintained operational continuity at the leisure centre, ensuring it stayed open for the large number of local residents who use it on a daily basis.

Demonstrating our commitment to sustainable delivery, our stockpiling of site-won clay material on site will enable its use in the planned pump track scheme that will happen on site, removing cost and carbon impacts that would have been incurred as a result of its transfer and disposal.

Our commitment to quality, efficiency and collaboration saw the project completed on time, within budget and to client satisfaction.

Fitzgerald demonstrated professionalism and expertise throughout the construction of Droitwich Leisure Centre Car Park. They consistently showed depth in knowledge and skills to overcome unavoidable delays on site due to weather and site restrictions. Communication throughout the project from start to finish was proactive and timely, allowing challenges to be addressed immediately. For that reason, this project remained on schedule and within budget. The management team on site were engaging and transparent throughout the build and this was replicated by the workforce on the ground. Fitzgerald have successfully tendered a number of key projects for us, and we would be happy to work with them in the future.” Jack Williams Senior Assistant Engineer Engineering Services
