MOTO Services Highways Access – M6 Junction 1
Fitzgerald delivered a key highway infrastructure scheme to create a junction access to the new MOTO service area at junction 1 of the M6 motorway in Rugby, Warwickshire.
The company were appointed as principal contractor for the £5.3 million scheme to deliver the construction of a new junction with a cut-through roundabout over a 75-week period.
The works are located on a former greenfield site and entailed the upgrade to the existing highway under a Section 278 agreement with the creation of new slip roads, installation of culverts, utility diversions, surfacing and road marking.
Traffic management was a key challenge as the live environment presented many logistical challenges in providing safe access for deliveries to our site as well as for other contractors building the service station adjacent to our works.
During construction Fitzgerald worked closely with Warwickshire County Council and Highways England in relation to their strategic road network whereby Fitzgerald liaised with the Traffic Management Directorate to ensure minimal disruption was caused to the travelling public and the operation of the network.
The new service area will create 120 jobs and has opened as the Covid pandemic lockdown restrictions were eased and was subsequently in high demand with UK staycations during the summer of 2021. The service station features 24 ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging points, 12 Tesla & 12 Electric Highway, making it the largest ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging site on the motorway.
