Weights Lane, Redditch S278 Works
Fitzgerald Contractors won a Section 278 highways contract for the construction of a large new roundabout on the A441 Birmingham Road and Weights Lane junction in Redditch. The works form an important vehicular access to a new housing estate which is currently under construction by Bovis Homes. Importantly, the works include the requirement for statutory utility diversions and service connections, including associated works to Western Power Distribution’s substation. The contract was undertaken in a live environment with significant traffic management measures put in place to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout the duration of the contract. This was achieved through the utilisation of our in-house planning team who effectively coordinated works in collaboration with both the client, and the various stakeholders.
The contract includes a new site access off the A441 Birmingham Road including the widening of Birmingham Road for the provision of a right turn facility, an emergency access off Weight’s Lane, highway improvements to the A441 Birmingham Road and Weights Lane as a result of the new junctions, highway drainage alterations and improvements, provision of street lighting, safety fencing and signage, as well as carriageway resurfacing and new road marking improvements to the Dagnell End and Birmingham Road signalised junction.
The drainage element of the works involves the construction of surface and foul water drainage to serve the new housing development adjacent to the highway works, the scheme also includes the construction of a new foul pumping station and a surface water attenuation pond.
