Why Fitzgerald?

Creating a Safe and Sustainable Business

We have an ambitious and robust business plan to drive our growth, which includes targeting strategic larger contracts and frameworks – this reflects our ambition to utilise the skills and experience of our employees and continually evolve our client service offering.

An example of this evolution is our safe delivery of the Bicester Village Retail Outlet highways improvement project in 2018 which during the construction period continued to receive a staggering 6.4 million annual visitors. The scheme, at £9.1 million in value is one of the most significant that we have undertaken.

Financial strength is the backbone of our business and we’re pleased to report that turnover and profitability continues to increase year-on-year, indeed 2017/18 saw record turnover of £33.6M, up by 7.5% from the previous year. This was highlighted in 2017 when Fitzgerald Contractors were named in the Financial Times ‘1,000 of Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies’.

Being a sustainable business covers all aspects of our operations and over 75% of the contracts that we undertake are repeat business through our existing client base and long-term Framework agreements. We believe strongly that building, developing and maintaining long-term relationships with our clients is the key to a successful business and we therefore fully embrace a long-term partnering approach. Continuing to work to the highest standards of business integrity and ethical conduct is the pre-requisite to maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with our clients, employees, supply chain and stakeholders. Just some of the ways we do this across Fitzgerald Contractors is:

  • Set challenging KPI targets, in particular around the sustainability agenda. We are currently partnering with a wide number of Tier 1 suppliers in order to exchange learning and ideas on health & safety, environment, sustainability, quality and community engagement
  • We consider a collaborative, non-confrontational approach is the right way to do business and this ethos is embedded in the way that we work with our clients
  • We directly employ our own workforce ensuring that we have the commitment and skills required to deliver our projects
  • Paying and rewarding employees fairly, paying in excess of the Living Wage to all employees
  • All our employees are actively listened to and encouraged to have a voice and contribute thoughts on what could be better across our company
  • Attracting and nurturing new talent to the industry,  Apprentices and Graduates make up 13% of our employees
  • Focussing on the development and enhancement of a strong supply chain where we proactively engage with our partners, create clear communication lines and drive improvement in a number of ways, such as through innovation workshops
  • We collaborate and share best practice across the industry. We recently delivered a highway improvement scheme on the A38 at Longbridge in Birmingham under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. Our team’s coordination of statutory diversion works de-risked the project which reduced the construction programme from 100 to 70 weeks
  • We achieve over 95% of invoices paid within the terms of the primary contract
  • We support a range of very worthy and charitable causes, and to date have raised over £250,000 for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice
  • We have volunteer days for employees, whereby each can take 1 day of leave to volunteer on a range of social community projects
