Project Complete: Blue Ribbon Roundabout, Coventry

Fitzgerald Contractors is proud to have delivered a major highway improvement scheme at Coventry’s iconic Blue Ribbon Roundabout, as part of the Crown Commercial Services Framework and the wider Foleshill Transport Package.

The £1.9m scheme enhances safety and promotes active travel by improving traffic flow, upgrading pedestrian and cycle routes, and introducing smarter, more inclusive infrastructure.

Key improvements include:

  • New LTN 1/20-compliant segregated cycleways
  • Signalised pedestrian and cycle crossings
  • Upgraded road surfacing and safety barriers
  • Improved road markings and splitter islands

A standout innovation is the installation of the Tac Grid tactile system with ‘talking’ beacons at crossings. These use a free mobile app to guide pedestrians, especially those with visual impairments, by identifying the type and location of the crossing, enhancing independence and safety.

To ensure minimal disruption during delivery, we worked collaboratively with Coventry City Council’s Highways Team, carefully phasing work during both day and night to keep traffic moving and the community connected.

Councillor Jim O’Boyle summed it up perfectly:

“We want to make it easier for people to walk and cycle. Swapping the car for shorter journeys is good for health and wellbeing, good for the air we breathe, and an excellent way to travel to work or school.”

A big thank you to our supply chain partners, the Council, and everyone who contributed to this successful and future-focused project.
