Landmark Centenary Square Scheme gains Award-Winning Recognition
Fitzgerald’s contribution to delivering the redevelopment of Centenary Square in Birmingham was recognised at the Insider West Midlands Property Awards 2019 on 7th November, seeing off six other shortlisted schemes to win the prestigious ‘Construction Project of the Year’ category.
The award ceremony was held at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole bringing together architectural practices, commercial developers, civil engineering companies and house builders to celebrate the best projects from across the region. The judges highlighted how Centenary Square’s complex construction was achieved whilst integrating a landmark destination into a fast-moving, internationally focussed city centre.
Fitzgerald Contractors worked in partnership with Birmingham City Council, Bouygues UK and Graeme Massie Architects to undertake the public realm contract across a 16,000m2 area. It involved the installation of high-specification paving with 12,500m2 of granite setts being laid, making it one of Europe’s largest paving schemes in 2018-19.
Centenary Square’s redevelopment was characterised by significant logistical constraints in a live environment with large pedestrian footfall, being located adjacent to Birmingham Library, the Rep Theatre, new Midlands Metro and ICC building. The project also involved complex engineering with the construction of a 6m deep, 10.5m dia shaft to form the subterranean heart of the development and the control centre for the 65m x 30m reflection pool.
The completion of Centenary Square comes at a pivotal and exciting time for the West Midlands with development of large commercial and residential schemes, the imminent arrival of an expanding Metro, Coventry City of Culture 2021, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 and HS2.
