Bicester Village Opening
Fitzgerald Contractors are delighted to have completed a significant highway improvements project on behalf of Value Retail’s extension of Bicester Village.
The £8m scheme required new road infrastructure to be created, in addition to the surface park and ride on the Western Perimeter Road, to relieve the traffic congestion experienced during busy trading periods at Bicester Village. The enhanced layout offers a new ‘Hamburger Roundabout’ and a new teardrop junction. Traffic controls are interlinked and can be remotely adjusted to maximise traffic flow. Two dedicated lanes now operate in and out of Bicester Village with a further two lanes directed towards the town centre. There is also one new roundabout and a junction with interlinked traffic light controls, which can be adjusted to maximise traffic capacity at different times of the day. The roundabouts are being designed in partnership with Cherwell District Council and will have enhanced landscaped features.
With an impressively landscaped entrance, the new surface car park at Bicester Village offers visitors a further 450 spaces, as well as a stunning public art installation that creates an illuminated forest gateway.
Fitzgerald Managing Director Nick Coley said: ‘The scheme at Bicester Village was extremely complex in that works had to be meticulously planned and phased to ensure minimal disruption to the travelling public and the day-to day-operation of the Village. Throughout the scheme we have worked closely with the Village and the local authority, and we are delighted to have delivered a fantastic project, in line with our programme, and in time for the grand opening’.
