Fitzgerald Unveil Amazing New Birmingham Public Square

We are delighted to announce the official opening of Centenary Square which brings a new high-specification public realm amenity to Birmingham.

In glorious Birmingham sunshine today (3rd July) Cllr Brigid Jones, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council led the celebrations with many local residents, businesses and visitors in attendance to mark the special occasion and explore the new square.

The £7million scheme was delivered in partnership with Bouygues UK for Birmingham City Council over an 83-week construction programme. Works involved the installation of high-specification paving with 12,500m2 of granite setts ethically sourced and individually laid by our skilled paviors, the scheme’s construction is one of Europe’s largest granite paving schemes undertaken in 2019.

Fitzgerald Contractors Managing Director Nick Coley said: ‘As a Birmingham-based company, we are immensely proud to have played a pivotal role in delivering such an important public space. The new square showcases the city and forms a key part of the wider development of Paradise Birmingham. Our site team were particularly pleased to speak to some of the very first visitors to the square and to receive such great comments’.

The project was characterised by its complex engineering and logistical challenges whereby it was vital to maintain safe and unimpeded access for the high volume of pedestrian footfall. Indeed the site is located adjacent to the International Convention Centre, Library of Birmingham, Rep Theatre and new Midlands Metro. Fitzgerald constructed the scheme through meticulous planning with its successful completion being underpinned by excellent client and stakeholder collaboration.
