Key Milestone at Centenary Square, Birmingham

The £12m redevelopment of Centenary Square in Birmingham saw a significant milestone achieved this week with the completion of the central shaft.

The 6m deep, 10.5m diameter shaft forms the subterranean heart of the development and the control centre for the 65m x 30m reflection pool. The shaft was sunk by Fitzgerald’s specialist subcontractor, marking the first of many milestones to come for one of Birmingham City Council’s flagship schemes. Drainage installation works are also well underway and upcoming works include the installation of two large attenuation tanks.

Looking towards the end of the year, container loads of granite paving will be arriving into the UK from China, to realise the high-specification finish of landscape architect Graeme Massie. Some 12,500m2 of granite paving will be installed before completion in Spring 2019, with the scheme being the largest granite paving scheme in Europe.
