Project update: Snow Hill Public Realm Programme
Fitzgerald continues to make excellent progress on-site delivering a highway and public realm scheme for Birmingham City Council with our team carrying out high-profile footway and highway remodelling works along Cornwall Street in the heart of Birmingham’s Colmore Business District. The 40-week contract is a key part of the Council’s Project 2.1 Snow Hill Public Realm Programme and was awarded through Fitzgerald’s place on Birmingham City Council’s Highways and Infrastructure Works Framework Lot 4.
Valued at £1.3m the scheme aims to improve public transport interchange, connectivity and economic performance and involves the installation of drainage, carriageway and footway construction, installation of kerbs, provision of signage, white lining, landscaping and lighting.
A key improvement is creating a new road alignment with Cornwall Street being changed to one-way westbound from New Market Street to Newhall Street. The most significant aspect of the design is a 3-metre-wide carriageway positioned centrally along the street and delineated by flush granite channels whilst new footway areas will be provided to both sides of the central carriageway.
To date Fitzgerald have completed the installation of granite block paving to the southside of Cornwall Street and are currently carrying out paving works to the northside of the street. Works are being undertaken in a live city centre environment with our robust public liaison management plan ensuring that we maintain traffic movement and pedestrian links throughout the site and provide unimpeded access to frontages.
