Snow Hill Public Realm Scheme Completion

Fitzgerald Contractors have successfully delivered a highway and public realm scheme for Birmingham City Council with our team carrying out high-profile road and footway remodelling works along Cornwall Street in the heart of Birmingham’s Colmore Business District. The 45-week contract is a key part of the Council’s Project 2.1 Snow Hill Public Realm Programme and was awarded through Fitzgerald’s place on Birmingham City Council’s Highways and Infrastructure Works Framework Lot 4.

Valued at £1.4m the scheme involved the installation of drainage, carriageway and footway construction with granite material, new kerbs, provision of signage, white lining, landscaping and lighting. A key improvement was the creation of a new road alignment with Cornwall Street changed to one-way westbound from New Market Street to Newhall Street.

The overall scheme aim is to improve public transport interchange, connectivity and economic performance. The most significant aspect of the design is a 3-metre-wide carriageway positioned centrally along the street and delineated by flush granite channels whilst new footway areas have been provided to both sides of the central carriageway. Works were undertaken in a live city centre environment with our robust public liaison management plan ensuring that we maintained traffic movement and pedestrian links throughout the street and provided unimpeded access to frontages.
